Frieze moves to New York in 2012

Frieze Art Fair, which opens in London’s Regent’s Park this week, will be held for the first time in New York in 2012.

More than 60,000 visitors are expected at the London event from Friday 13 October to Sunday 16 October, which hosts work from more than 170 contemporary art galleries. Organisers have also launched a new online first for 2011 – the Virtual Frieze Art Fair – allowing you to search online for artists or artwork displaying at the fair.

The New York event will take place in a unique bespoke structure designed by SO-IL architects on Randall’s Island, Manhattan, on 4-7 May 2012, with a VIP preview on 3 May.

New York Mayor Michael R Bloomberg said of the event: ‘New York City has long been a global centre for arts and culture, and in recent years, the number and size of local art fairs that attract New Yorkers and visitors from around the world has grown dramatically. Frieze has a reputation for hosting world-class shows, and with Randall’s Island as the location and New York City’s waterfront as the backdrop, this new event should be extraordinary.’

The Frieze Art Fairs focus only on contemporary and living artists, and offer a curated selection of work from 170 different galleries from around the world. This year, galleries from Colombia, Peru and Argentina are exhibiting at the fairs for the first time.
