A swingin night at the museum

More than 300 leading travel players joined other treasures of the world last night at the British Museum, for Conde Nast Traveller’s 15th Readers’ Travel Awards.

They came to Bloomsbury from all over the globe, from Rajasthan to California. Closer to home, Matt Green of Babington House in Somerset arrived straight from the hotel’s refurbishment, swapping hard hat for lounge suit to pick up the Best UK Leisure Hotel award. And Mr & Mrs Smith signed in not under a pseudonym but as themselves, James and Tamara Lohan, to collect their award for Best Travel Website, mrandmrssmith.com.

The awards were presented by Melinda Stevens, Conde Nast Traveller’s new Editor, and were a joyful affair. A particular highlight was the soundtrack, compiled by the magazine’s Word of Mouth Editor Rick Jordan who, after being asked several times by guests where they could get hold of the music, remarked that he should have got some CDs made. Look out for him selling them next year, cigarette-girl style, after the ceremony.

Guests drank Lanson Champagne and Ketel One Vodka cocktails amid a blaze of yellow – the Editor’s favourite colour, and as bright as the unseasonably warm September sunshine – thanks to florist Jamie Aston. For the cab ride home: goodie bags filled with Union Jack chocs from Hotel Chocolat, ESPA beauty products, Icelandic Glacial water (welcome after all that Champagne), and the new October issue (with the fabulous Panama cover) of Conde Nast Traveller. Inside it, the Top 100 winners, as well as features on Paris, the Italian Lakes, Cuba, Lisbon and the Cotswolds, among many others.
