The art of coffee and culture

The celebrated international pop-up gallery and cafe, Galleria Illy, will be setting up shop in London this September.

Michaelangelo Pistoletto, winner of the 2003 Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion for Lifelong Achievement award, will be directing the exhibition. Together with his art foundation, Cittadellarte, Pistoletto will contribute a range of works including his award-winning mirror table ‘Love Difference’ (pictured above).

Performance artist Marina Abramovic; co-director and curator at the Serpentine Gallery, Hans Ulrich Obrist; and Brazilian artist Carlito Carvalhosa, are also among the internationally renowned artists showcasing their work in the temporary exhibition space.

The pop-up gallery will play host to a programme of art, literature, science, design and culinary events. A selection of sweet treats, titled ‘Love Difference Pastries,’ will be on offer, as well as free courses to master the art of coffee preparation from illy baristas.

The collection of illy coffee cups will also welcome a new interpretation from artist Francesco Clemente. His take on the espresso cup will be added to the installation that holds the contributions of Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne and Pedro Almodovar.

Galleria Illy has been on an international tour with exhibitions in New York, Milan, Trieste, Istanbul and Berlin. Hosted by lighting and furnishings designers FLOS and Moroso, the gallery will open in London on 12 September and run until 15 October 2011.

Galleria Illy will open 12 September at 15 Rosebery Avenue, London, EC1R 4SP. Open Monday -Friday 10:00-19:00. Entrance is free. For the complete schedule of events visit
