A safari thats a bestseller

Fifteen years after the publication of his first novel, ‘No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency’, author Alexander McCall Smith is returning again to Botswana – and this time you can go with him.

A small group of guests can join McCall Smith for five days of game-viewing, and in the evenings, around the campfire, they can chat with the author about the inspiration for his best-selling books (his first has sold 20 million copies). The author will also talk about his new children’s tale ‘Precious and the Mystery of the Missing Lion’, which is set at the Eagle Island Camp (pictured above) – one of two luxury safari camps the group will visit.

Eagle Island is situated on remote Xaxaba island among a web of waterways and lush vegetation forming the Okavango Delta. The secluded retreat is famous for its variety of big game and exotic birds. The party will fly by light aircraft on to the Khwai River Lodge, which is set on the edge of a forest overlooking the floodplains of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve – and a great place to spot lions, cheetahs, hippos, and birds of prey.

The two camps offer contrasting environments and wildlife experiences, and are a great introduction to Botswana’s unspoilt wilderness, and are both Orient-Express safari lodges. But hurry if you want a place – this one-off ‘Journey to the Heart of Botswana with Alexander McCall Smith’ is only available from 22 to 27 November 2013.

The experience is priced at ?3,867 per person based on two people sharing, and includes five nights accommodation at Eagle Island Camp and Khwai River Lodge, all meals, premium brand spirits (except champagne, VSOP spirits and South African Reserve Wines), two daily game viewing activities, scheduled light-aircraft inter-camp transfer flights, national park fees and laundry services.
