Jerseys quirky film festival returns

Although only in its third year, Jersey’s Branchage Film Festival has already established a world-class reputation for its quirky array of films, dynamic live performances and ambient screening venues.

This September it returns even bigger and better than before with some of the island’s most iconic landmarks set to mesmerize audiences with the cinematic experience of a lifetime. From the 11th century Mont Orgueil Castle to the eerie War Tunnels, this boutique festival uniquely selects atmospheric locations to provide an unusual screening space that is both thought-provoking and inventive.

The 2010 programme is packed with visual temptations for everyone, and popular attractions are likely to include the music biopic Gainsbourg, a digitally-restored British war classic for historians, and a spectacular 3D musical light show at Val de la Mar Dam.

At the more experimental end of the spectrum, Japanese sound merchants Bo Ningen will perform live to a 2001 anime animated classic, and there will be a live musical accompaniment to fairytale animations made during 1970s Soviet Russia. The hub of the event is a century-old Belgian Spiegeltent bizarrely fashioned out of wood, canvas and mirrors, and it promises to be the strangest film festival you will ever attend.

If these are somehow not enough to whet your appetite, there will also be exhibitions and educational talks alongside madcap Branchage parties to entice the curious and the crazy. Throw in unspoilt beaches, beautiful views, and direct flights from all major UK airports to this sunny little island, and the Branchage Film Festival looks set to continue to build its cult following of fans in 2010.
