Insider tips: Roksanda Ilincics Montenegro

Fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic, the Serbian-born London-based designer who has just unveiled her first-ever swimwear collection, is an expert on stylish travel. We asked her to share her insider tips for her favourite destination, the coast of Montenegro…

What’s the first piece of advice you’d give to someone planning a visit to Montenegro?
Apart from swimsuits, make sure to bring ski outfits, too – a quick helicopter journey will take you from the beach to the ski slopes.

If you only had one night to stay in any hotel, which would you book?
It would be Sveti Stefan or Villa Milocer – both have been recently redeveloped by Aman Resorts, and they should be open by the end of July.

Where would you eat?
Breakfast: The local markets are filled with delicious produce and bakeries – my favourite are the large, pink tomatoes which can be eaten like a piece of fruit.

Lunch: The restaurant Stari Mlini is situated near the beautiful town of Kotor. Apart from the exceptional food, it’s known for its beautiful setting as it sits at the top of the river.

Dinner: There are a number of a small restaurants right on the beach of Milocer, which are all known for their delicious seafood.

After hours: The party town of Budva has an amazing Pizza Kiosk open all night to help restore fuel after an evening of dancing

Which tourist sites would you avoid, and which would you try not to miss?
Montenegro has spectacular natural beauty and is full of contrasts. Sights from Moraca Canyon and Kotor Bay to Ada Bojana should not be missed. However, one of my favourite spots in the world has to be Skadarsko Jezero (Lake Skandar). Last but not least, no visitor should miss the authentic restaurant Pelikan and its owner Mr Zec, at the entrance of the sleepy town called Virpazar.

I would avoid Veilika Plaza (a big sandy beach) in Ulcinj!

What’s your best insider tip to the coast of Montenegro?
Local people are very friendly – take their advice about where to go. They can always recommend the best places to go out and dance all night long on tables, too!
