New York City for families

New York City for families

David Moreno won the prestigious title ‘New York Concierge of the Year’ last year for his work at Gramercy Park Hotel, and we couldn’t think of anyone better to share his tips for families in New York…

What are the top attractions for families?
– Discovery Exhibits (Harry Potter, Pompeii)
– Coney Island
– Museum of Natural History
– Central Park (Children’s Zoo, Carousel, Petting Zoo)
– Ice Skating in the winter (Wolman Rink, Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park)
– Statute of Liberty
– Empire State Building
– NY Waterway Taxi tours

Best way to get around the city with kids?
Taxis – especially if you have more than two people travelling together. It’s hard enough navigating subways when you are alone and familiar, but with little ones it’s impossible. The only time I would suggest the subway is when it’s no transfers, not during rush hour and the destination has a convenient stop.

Best family-friendly restaurants
– Serendipity
– Bubby’s
– Max Brenner
– Otto
– Pulino’s
– Ruby Foo’s
– Cafe Un Deux Trois
– Blue Smoke

What should families do for evening entertainment?
Go to a fun Broadway or off-Broadway show or a game (NBA or NHL) at Madison Square Garden. Visit Times Square where the whole family can have fun visiting places such as: Ripley’s Believe or Not, Toys ‘R Us, M&M Store, the Hershey’s store, and the Madam Tussaud’s. And other places that would be fun are Nemo Karaoke, Kids Rockers, Bowlmor and Dialogue In the Dark.

What are the must-dos?
Include a trip to Brooklyn and especially to Williamsburg, together with DUMBO. A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge will give you views of New York that you can’t find anywhere else. Also, when you get to the Brooklyn side, you’ll find wonderful brand new parks by the Hudson River with amazing views of New York.

Where should families avoid?
Try to avoid areas such as Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, the Meatpacking District and East Village. They can be intimidating and overcrowded for the kids.

Best insider tip for families in New York
Do not eat at chains like Applebee’s or TGI Friday’s. You might think you’ll save money but you’ll actually get ripped off. Introduce your kids to new flavors that are totally child-friendly. One example is Cara Cas Arepa Bar: similar to tacos but totally unique. Absolutely fantastic, family friendly and affordable. Another great idea would be to pack and impromptu picnic. Visit the Whole Foods at Columbus Circle, pick up lunch or dinner items and head to the park. Or go to Chelsea Market and head to the High Line (a wonderful garden built on an old railroad).
