My Johannesburg

My Johannesburg

INSIDER GUIDE: Hayleigh Evans, co-owner of POPArt theatre, takes us through her ideal day in Maboneng, the hip inner-city neighbourhood of Johannesburg.

‘For breakfast, it’s a toss-up between my favourite coffee-and-croissant sidewalk spot, Uncle Merv’s (corner of Fox and Kruger Streets), and a traditional omelette at Canteen. This is followed by shopping, usually at Loin Cloth & Ashes (20 Kruger Street), whose slick cuts cater to the everywoman.’

‘Afternoons involve browsing galleries or buildings in the inner city, followed by a swift craft beer at Chalkboard before a 6pm call at POPArt (286 Fox Street).’

‘For late night, we’ve discovered Zebra Inn (252 Market Street), a bar two blocks up with a speakeasy feel, accessed through a ground-floor mechanic’s workshop. Otherwise, Pata Pata is a laid-back and cosy spot to close the evening over drinks with our cast and audience.’
