For those wanting a new approach to a fitness regime, Paresa Phuket in Thailand is now offering complimentary ‘Muay Thai’ or Thai boxing classes to guests throughout the week.

The luxury hotel, set on the Western Coast of Phuket on the shores of Kamala, aims to teach the iconic martial art that emphasises exercise and defence. Developed from a combination of Chinese and Indian martial arts and combat methods from Siamese soldiers, Thai boxing has grown increasingly popular as a customary health ritual. The cardiovascular and fat burning workout originated thousands of years ago, and can be recorded back to 400 years ago in the Thai capital, Ayutthaya.

‘Muay Thai’ is referred to as ‘the art of eight limbs and concentrates on body conditioning and mental advancement and stability. Lessons focus on the basic techniques of kicks, elbows, knee strikes, and punches, led by expert instructors in class sizes of less than 3. Guests wishing to take part in a smaller group can book private lessons.

The resort can organise elephant trekking through tropical forests as a more scenic way to exercise, and can take visitors island hopping in the sunshine, to boost intake of vitamin D. A more relaxing option available is an indulgent day in the spa, the perfect way to start a New Year detox.
