Venice to Stockholm in Art Deco style

Next year Orient-Express will launch a rail journey to Scandinavia for the first time in its 130-year history. Departing in April 2013, the route will run from Venice to Stockholm via Copenhagen.

The journey begins with a two-night stay at the Gold-Listed Hotel Cipriani, set on an island across from St Mark’s Square in Venice. Before departing guests will have plenty of time to see the sights (Basilica di San Marco is a must-see!), take a gondola ride and sample the cuisine. A the hotel, try the fine Italian fare in Fortuny Restaurant, or soak up a more relaxed atmosphere in Cip’s Club or the Pool Restaurant.

Guests then leave from Santa Lucia Station, travelling overnight aboard the luxurious Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, passing through Austria, Switzerlandand Germany before stopping in Copenhagen for a night at Copenhagen Marriott Hotel, and onwards to Stockholm, where they’ll spend two nights at the Gold-Listed Grand Hotel Stockholm.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is no ordinary train: each of the carriages has been restored to its former 1920’s glory. Cabins convert from a comfortable sitting room during the day to a bedroom in the evening. Dinner on board, prepared by Head Chef Christian Bodiguel and served by white gloved waiters, is certainly an occasion to dress for; the Art Deco dining car makes a glamorous backdrop.

And there’s plenty more to sample in Stockholm. The city is fast becoming a foodie capital, with openings this year alone including Jonas, an innovative restaurant from ex Pierre Gagnaire Restaurant chef Jonas Lundgren; concept restaurant Ekstedt; and the menu-less Gastrologik.

‘This is the most romantic of journeys coupled with stunning scenery, elegant service and culinary treats all bound up in the original and iconic 1920’s carriages of the train,’ says Gary Franklin, Managing Director of Orient-Express Trains & Cruises. ‘This voyage through six countries will provide memories that will last a lifetime.’

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express departs Venice for Stockholm on 8 April 2013, and the journey costs ?4140 per person. To book contact Orient-Express (0845 217 0799;
