Five-star half-price paradise holidays for volunteers

The tropical paradise of the Maldives – with its pristine sands and azure seas – is often a costly destination, but now travellers visiting these beautiful islands have the chance to save a few pennies while donating some of their time to the local community.

The Soneva Fushi and Soneva Gili resorts – part of the luxury Six Senses hotels collection – are offering its guests the opportunity to take part in a new voluntourism scheme, during which guests who pay for a five-night stay will be invited to take part in a variety of different conservational activities in exchange for five free nights.

From helping divers and snorkelers preserve the coral reefs and their population of friendly sharks as part of the islands’ marine conservation programs to giving talks in local schools and planting trees on nearby islands, guests may choose from a range of rewarding activities for five well-spent hours a day. After five days of volunteering, guests may then spend the next five days luxuriating in the surroundings of their own villas, relaxing in the Six Senses spa or dining at the resorts’ organic gourmet restaurants.

Tour operator Carrier (, 0161 491 7660) is offering 10 nights at the Soneva Fushi or Soneva Gili for ?1,870 per person, based on two people sharing on a five-day volunteer basis. The price includes return flights from Heathrow airport with Qatar airlines and private transfers.
