Award-winning beaches in Britain

Those who want to enjoy a beautiful beach need not travel too far: British shores stand among the best in the world and have been awarded Blue Flags for their excellence in facilities, water quality and cleanliness.

Some 70 beaches in England passed the strict tests and have been awarded Blue Flag status, which guarantees visitors that the beach has excellent facilities, is litter-free and has a high standard of water quality.

Leading the way with six Blue Flags is Torbay, followed closely by Cornwall and Southend-on Sea with five flags each. Traditional seaside destinations such as Skegness, Bournemouth and Scarborough will also be flying the Blue Flag this year. Awarded by Keep Britain Tidy, the anti-litter charity, the Blue Flag scheme is internationally recognised.

The Quality Coast Award was introduced by Keep Britain Tidy in 2007 to reward beaches in England deemed to have achieved the highest standards of beach management. England can also boast 108 beaches with QCAs this year. In total, 32 beaches received both awards.
