California drinking: wine tastings

During the summer months California’s vineyards have a busy time on their hands, with numerous wine tasting festivals for visitors to choose from as many vineyards look forward to the autumn harvest.

Greenwood Ridge Vineyards – located in the north of California – host the annual California Wine Tasting Championships. And this year it will be celebrating its 30th birthday. Set right in the heart of California’s wine land, the championships takes place north of San Francisco next to the Mendocino forest.

The competition is pretty simple: Samples of eight California wines appear at your table and you have to identify each type of grape. You decide what it is, whether it’s Zinfandel or Carbernet. But it doesn’t matter if you’re a novice, amateur or professional as a list of ten varieties are provided from which to choose. There is also a doubles competition.

If you’re one of the top three finalists in the amateur or pro division you advance to the Grand Championship round where there are the “sudden death” taste-offs to decide who gets awarded the top prize.
