Lo-fi luxury in Colorado

Lo-fi luxury in Colorado

To many, the thought of a stay in the wilderness doesn’t immediately conjure up a luxury spa and Championship golf course. While the formula of providing uber-civilisation in a natural setting has certainly worked for the popular Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, the hotel has decided to provide a rustic alternative for those looking for something a little more lo-fi.

That’s not to say visitors to the newly-opened The Ranch at Emerald Valley will be roughing it. The all-inclusive ranch, where meals are served throughout your stay, is a focal point for the new retreat, which sits a distant eight miles to the west of the main resort.

Set high in Colorado’s Front Range at 8,000 feet, it is surrounded by ten bespoke cabins of different sizes, each with wood burning fireplaces, private decks and oversize showers. Depending on your numbers, you can opt for the cosy Aspen cabin which sleeps two, right up to the giant Hill Cabin which can comfortably accommodate a party of ten. A maximum of 32 guests will be staying at any one time.

Guests can enjoy the natural surroundings of the Pike National Forest which is ideal for mountain biking, nature hikes, canoeing and stargazing, while the ranch itself provides fly fishing on a private lake and horse riding through the many surrounding meadows and trails. Meals include fresh grilled fish, western steaks and home-made desserts such as strawberry and cherry pie. Local microbrews are included on the drinks menu, along with fine wines and spirits.

For those who come along that may decide they prefer the great indoors after all, it only takes a phone call to have them whisked back to the amenities of the Broadmoor Resort, including award-winning spa, swimming pools, fitness centre, its 25 retail boutiques and 19 restaurants set in 3,000 acres.

For 2013 The Ranch at Emerald Valley will open from August to the end of October 2013, and reopen on 1 May, 2014. Rates begin at US $435 per person per day, based on double occupancy, inclusive of all meals, activities and non-alcoholic drinks. For more information visit www.broadmoor.com/ranch/
