Vietnam’s new luxury beach retreat

Since it became possible to fly direct from London to Ho Chi Minh City recently, a host of brilliant hotels have been popping up all over the country. The latest, Anantara Mui Ne Resort & Spa, is on the south-east coast.

On the beach next to Mui Ne village, the hotel is well located for water sports enthusiasts: guests can windsurf, kitesurf, sail and snorkel. Landlubbers can visit vibrant red sand-dunes, or the eighth-century Cham Tower near Phan Thiet, hike through the rainforest on Ta Ku Mountain, or take a day trip out to Bau Trang, known locally as ‘Lotus Lake’ for its abundance of beautiful lotus flowers.

There are 89 rooms, suites and villas; contemporary in style and with all mod cons (Wifi, iPod dock, plasma-screen television). Four restaurants serve everything from homemade pho to freshly caught and grilled sea crab and Western dishes. And wine connoisseurs can sample wines paired with cheeses and a charcuterie in The Wine Room. Guests can also ‘dine by design’; choosing their own menu and dining location – a private bit of beach, perhaps. Those taken with Vietnamese cuisine – and it’s hard not to be – can take cookery lessons with the hotel’s chef.

The spa offers treatments that incorporate natural ingredients: lotus flower, ylang ylang oil, lemongrass, tamarind and herbs. Try the signature treatment, a four-handed massage that begins with a floral foot ritual.

Anantara Mui Ne Resort & Spa is a four-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City.
