Loh Lik Peng opens The Waterhouse at South Bund

New hotel the Waterhouse at South Bund in Shanghai – already a member of Design Hotels – opens today.

Created by entrepreneur and hotelier Peng Loh – who is also responsible for the Town Hall Hotel & Apartments in London – the 19 rooms offer an authentic experience and reflect the history and surroundings of the city.

The hotel’s restaurant – Table No.1 – is manned by critically acclaimed chef Jason Atherton, while the rooftop bar overlooks the Shanghai skyline, and a separate ‘event space’ has a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere.

Adding a further touch of style is Shanghai fashion designer He Yan who created all manager and front-of-house uniforms.

Shanghai-based design firm Neri&Hu Research and Design Office (NHRDO) were behind the concept of the new hotel. Founding partner of NHRDO Lyndon Neri says, “This is a hotel that puts the emphasis on the traveller in search of some meaning, not just the luxury component of living.”

To help their guests really experience what Shanghai has to offer Waterhouse also hires out vintage motor scooters with sidecars and old-fashioned bicycles for tours of the bustling old city area.

Visitors can go shoe shopping for traditional Fei Yue’s and visit the Anxi market which sells an array of second hand clothing. After a long day of sight-seeing the Waterhouse can recommend Shanghai’s best Chinese doctors and acupuncturists to help guests relax.

Opening rates at The Waterhouse at South Bund start from ?158 per room per night.
