Down by the river

An incredibly luxurious new safari lodge is opening this June in a rugged and wild spot on the bank of the Wami River, bordering the Saadani National Park in eastern Tanzania.

Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge has 18 suites on stilts along the riverbank connected by wooden walkways. The wood-and-thatch suites are intended to blend in with the surrounding foliage, but there are mod-cons inside: running hot water, hairdryers, air-con (in some of the suites, anyway).

Each room has a four-poster bed facing large windows through which you can see the river, a large bathroom with forest views from the tub (there are blinds for modesty), and a private balcony; the two-bedroom Wami suite also has its own swimming pool. The lodge has a covered lounge area where guests can swap safari stories, a restaurant and a spa.

A boat takes guests up and down the river, where kingfishers, flamingos, hippos and crocs can be spotted; elephant and giraffe from the Saadani National Park can sometimes be seen drinking at the water’s edge, too.
