Spring break

Spring break

With so many hotels opening in China it’s virtually impossible to find one that really stands out. Enter the new Banyan Tree Chongqing Beibei, which opens its doors in the south-west this summer.

It’s a contemporary resort that takes full advantage of the natural hot springs found in the Jinyun Mountain Natural Reserve. Indeed, all villas, scattered among lush foliage fed by a stream, have their own natural hot spring pools. Interiors are typically Chinese in style, with dark wood and cream panelled walls, extravagant lantern-lights, embroidered silk cushions, accents of red, grand marble bathrooms and plenty of bamboo.

The hotel has three restaurants – two serving Chinese cuisine (lots of chilli and Sichuan-pepper-infused one-pot dishes), the other serving international dishes – as well as a poolside bar and a cigar lounge. But the spa is the main event: there are seven indoor and outdoor mineral-rich pools in which to soak away the day (great for digestive and skin problems), a long list of treatments and a yoga studio.

It’s not all aromatherapy showers and body scrubs, though. The enchantingly named Three Little Gorges is the place to go for riverboat cruises and Fairy Mountain for hill-walking.
