Air passengers face disruption this week as a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland passes over European air space. It is just over a year since the skies above Europe were closed due to an ash cloud from the Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which forced aviation regulators to close 80% of European airspace during the Easter holiday in 2010. Greece hit by nationwide strike

Thousands of workers took to the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki this morning in a mass protest against new deficit-cutting measures enforced by the Greek government.

The introduction of an austerity programme designed to claw back billions of national debt by raising taxes and freezing pay has resulted in a national public sector strike organised by unions who feel the move is a ‘declaration of war against the working and middle classes’. (more…)

Air traffic returns to normal – almost

European air traffic has returned to normal with almost all restrictions lifted since the Icelandic ash cloud eruption which closed airports across the UK. However, just as airlines and passengers were looking forward to clear skies, Scottish airports were shut after a new ash cloud scare. (more…)
